Glucose

The primary energy source for the body's cells. It is also the only energy source for the nervous system and brain. The body needs a steady supply. A constant level must be maintained by the body. It is normal for glucose to rise after a meal and in response to this, the body releases insulin via the pancreas. As glucose is metabolized the level in the body drops, and insulin release stops. If glucose levels are too low such as after a workout, glucagon is released for the liver to turn some glycogen back into glucose. If all is well the amount of glucose in the body remains stable. If the body becomes unstable the body will try to restore the balance. It will do this by releasing insulin and getting rid of glucose through urine. Diabetes can disrupt the balance between the pancreas and glucose. If an individual has diabetes then this means that the body can not process and use glucose normally. The Glucose blood test assesses levels of glucose in the body. If a person can not find the balance with insulin they have type1. If an individual is resistant to insulin they have type 2 diabetes. Acute changes in glucose can be life-threatening and cause organ failure.
