The Iron TIBC ferritin blood measures your total iron, iron-binding capacity, percent saturation (calculated), and ferritin levels in the blood. The Iron test checks the iron levels in the blood. The total iron-binding capacity (TIBC) test examines if you have too much or too little iron in your blood. Iron moves through the blood attached to a protein called transferrin and the TIBC test is a good indirect measurement of transferrin availability. Ferritin testing measures the iron storage capacity in the body and if it happens to be on the lower side, it is an indicator of iron deficiency. Overall, the test is used to assess how the body transports iron in the blood, and to investigate iron-deficiency anemia or iron overload.
Includes:
Iron, Total
Iron Binding Capacity
% Saturation (calculated)
Ferritin
Preparation: Testing should be done in the morning in a fasted state, since iron values decrease by 30% during the course of the day. Please do not exercise prior to testing. It is best that your blood is taken in a rested state.
